CAT 2016 Registrations shoot up to a seven-year-highCATKing
Every year, lakhs of students register for the Common Admission Test (CAT) for admission to the IIMs and other top business schools in the country. The total number of applications keeps fluctuating every year. Also, this number had started to dwindle in recent years, indicating a lack of interest in higher management studies. However, the registration window for CAT 2016 closed with 2,32,434 applications, as confirmed by the office of the Convener for CAT 2016. This makes the number of applicants, the highest in the past seven years.
The number of registrations last year was 2,18,664. So, there has been an increase of around 13,700+ students this year. This is a huge increase. The registrations for applying to CAT 2016 were open till the 22nd of September. The deadline was then extended till 27th. This extension helped boost the already increasing number of registrations. Before the extension, 2,08,000 students had registered, as per IIM Bangalore, the institute coordinating CAT 2016 this year. The 5-day extension helped bring in around 24,000 additional registrations.
There has also been a significant increase in the number of female candidates applying for the test. Male candidates make up 67% of the total registrations this year. Although males are in majority, the number of total female candidates did increase by 1% this year. This is again a small, but significant improvement. This increase is due to women making up most of the 14,000 students that had registered in the extension period.
Another thing to be noted is the increase in the people-with-disabilities applicants from 901 last year, to 938 in 2016. However, the male candidates make up around 80% of most of the applications. These statistics are a wake-up call towards more encouragement for women, in the people-with-disabilities category. Still, the number of women in this category has increased by 2.5 percentage points this year, which is a small victory in its own right.
CAT scores are accepted by most of the 100 top-level institutes throughout the country. The number of registrations for CAT therefore, acts as an indicator of the growing interest of the country’s youth in Management Education.
