Overview on MAT

Management Aptitude Test (MAT) is a standardized test being administered since 1988 to facilitate Business Schools (B-Schools) to screen candidates for admission to MBA and allied program. Govt. of India, Ministry of HRD approved MAT as a national level test in 2003.


The candidate must be a graduate in any discipline. Candidates appearing for the final year of bachelor’s degree and are awaiting results can also apply.

Test Duration and Pattern:

MAT consists of 200 questions to be attempted in 150 mins.

The following areas are tested:

Language Comprehension
Mathematical Skills
Data Analysis and Sufficiency
Intelligence and Critical Reasoning
Indian and Global Environment

MAT is a paper-based as well as computer-based test. A candidate can take any one of the two testing formats. While the paper-based test is conducted only one day, the computer-based test is conducted in the week following it over a window of approximately a week.

Scoring Pattern:

Each section has 40 question and MAT paper also have negative marking of 25% on each incorrect answer.

Important Dates:

AIMA-MAT is usually conducted 4 times a year. Generally on the first Sunday of February, May, September and December. The list of institutes that use the AIMA-MAT results vary from test to test.
