What is GRE?

The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test which is required to be taken by students who are seeking admission to graduate schools. The exam has been developed to evaluate the verbal, analytical and mathematical skills of the candidates. Most universities in the US, while inviting applications from prospective students, ask for GRE scores. Conducted by ETS (Educational Testing Service), it is an online computer-based exam.


In the graduate school admissions process, the level of emphasis that is placed upon GRE scores varies widely between schools and between departments within schools. The importance of a GRE score can range from being a mere admission formality to an important selection factor.


Who can take the exam?


There is no specific eligibility criteria for the GRE exam. Anyone who wants to pursue graduation can register for this exam, irrespective of their age or  regardless of their field of specialization. The only thing you need to keep in mind is the fact that you will be required to produce your original passport as proof of identity at the exam centre, so make sure that you have a valid passport before you register for the GRE exam.

How much is the exam fees?


The application fee for GRE General Test is $205 worldwide, which would roughly translate to Rs. 13,500 to Rs. 14,500 approximately. GRE Subject Test costs $150 worldwide, which would cost Indian students Rs. 10,000 to 11,000 approximately. Avail GRE prep here for INR 4999/- only.


What is the exam structure?


GRE exam pattern is as follow- three sections, namely Analytical Writing, Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning.

Analytical Writing: (One section with two separately timed tasks, one “Analyze an Issue” task and one “Analyze an Argument” task), duration is 30 minutes per task.

How to register for the exam?



To sit for GRE test, candidates have to first create a ‘My GRE Account’. You can apply for the GRE as well as check your scores in your account. For the GRE general test there are three ways to register which are: Online, Phone and Mail registration. Candidates can opt from Online and Mail registration in the case of GRE subject test.

  1. Create an ETS account for GRE registration
  2. Select GRE test type- GRE General or GRE subject test
  3. Set location and date for the GRE
  4. Fill academic background information required for GRE registration
  5. Make payment through American Express, Discover, JCB, MasterCard or VISA

When can I check my results?


ETS sends the candidates an email notification when their respective scores are available. The results are available in the respective GRE test accounts of the aspirants. Candidates sitting for the computer-based test can check their unofficial Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning scores at the test center. The official results are available within 10 to 15 days of the GRE test.


What is the scoring pattern?



1.The AWA section grades are from 0-6 in 0.5 point increments.
2.The Quantitative Reasoning section grades are from 130-170 in 1 point increment.
