Meaning:  a person who enjoys eating and often eats too much.
He was what the French would call a gourmand and most psychiatrists a compulsive eater. The event was an absolute delight for gourmands with a ‘smorgasbord’ of delicacies on offer from each country.
Note: The words gourmand and gourmet overlap in meaning but are not identical. Both can be used to mean ‘a connoisseur of good food’ but gourmand is more usually used to mean ‘a person who enjoys eating and often eats too much.
