Summary

Graduate Record Examination is the general test is the world’s largest assessment program for graduate admissions. Over a half million individuals take the GRE in over 1,000 test centers in 160 countries every year. And scores are accepted at thousands of graduate programs around the world, for masters and doctoral degrees. More than 1,200 business schools around the world accept the GRE, including top-ranked MBA programs according to The Financial Times, U.S. News & World Report and Bloomberg Businessweek. And a handful (currently 19) law schools in the US accept GRE scores, including a few of the very best schools: Harvard, Columbia, Georgetown, and Northwestern.
The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is a standardized test that is required to be taken by students seeking admission to graduate schools. The exam has been developed to evaluate the verbal, analytical and mathematical skills of the candidates. GRE is a computer-based test and has a user-friendly design. Individuals applying to graduate schools in order to pursue a Masters of Science (MS) or MBA are required to take the exam.

GRE also has subject tests, apart from the basic GRE exam. These subject tests help to make your application stand out from the rest by highlighting your subject knowledge and skill-level of a particular subject. Each subject test is intended for those students who have a bachelor’s degree in the particular disciplines. The subject tests being offered currently are Biochemistry, Biology, Chemistry, Literature, Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology.

Eligibility

There is no GRE  Eligibility. Aspirants can apply for the GRE  irrespective of age and qualification, as there is no specific GRE eligibility criteria 2018. The candidates, however, have to fulfill the admission criteria for the institutes/ universities they are applying to. As a GRE  score is used for admission to postgraduate programme, students who have completed their undergraduate studies should opt for the examination.


GRE Fees

The application fee for GRE General Test is $205 worldwide, which would roughly translate to Rs. 13,500 to Rs. 14,500 approximately.
GRE Subject Test costs $150 worldwide, which would cost Indian students Rs. 10,000 to 11,000 approximately.


Process

The GRE General Test is available at more than 1,000 test centers in more than 160 countries. It is offered as a computer-delivered test year round at most locations around the world and as a paper-delivered test up to three times a year in areas where computer-delivered testing is not available.
Step 1:Fill the Application Form.
In order to register for the test, view your scores and access other services, you’ll need an ETS account.
View test centers and dates for the GRE General test. For the computer-delivered test, you can also view seat availability, though you won’t be able to register without signing into your GRE Account.
The computer-delivered test is offered year round, and you can register online or by phone.
The paper-delivered test is offered up to three times a year in areas of the world where the computer-delivered test is not available, and you can register online or by mail.
After registration you would get a mail notification of your test appointment. Take a print out of this and keep it with you.

Step 2: On the date of exam, go to the specified center with the print out of your email confirmation and an identity proof follow their processes and write the test. Report to the test center at least 30 minutes prior to your scheduled testing time. If you arrive late, you may not be admitted and your test fee will be forfeited.
Step 3:
Appear for exam It is conducted in both computer based and paper – delivered way. The Analytical Writing section will always be the first, whereas, the Verbal Reasoning, Quantitative Reasoning, and unscored sections may appear in any order. The writing section has two tasks and you have 30 minutes to complete each task, making the total time for this section to be one hour. Verbal section has to be completed within one hour as well as both the two sections require 30 minutes each. Same goes for quantitative section, where you get 35 minutes for the two sections.
Step 4:
Verbal Reasoning score: On a 130–170 score scale, in 1-point increments
Quantitative Reasoning score: On a 130–170 score scale, in 1-point increments
Analytical Writing score: On a 0–6 score scale, in half-point increments
GRE total score: On a 260–340 score scale
The total scores are valid for five years after the year in which you took the exam.
Your official test scores will be available in your account on the GRE website. They will be sent to the universities of your choice within six weeks of your test date. You will receive an email from ETS that your official GRE result is available in your account.
Step 5:
Now start applications to these schools. These schools would have an online application portal. There you create an account and login. Fill in all your details, GPA etc. Then you reach the section where you fill in GRE scores. Fill your scores. Submit all the required documentation online and post all the paper documents as needed.

Not all of them might offer the computerised test. Some may offer the Paper-delivered test


Syllabus

It is important to know how to plan and prepare for GRE 2018 and achieve the scores required for respective institutes.
Verbal Reasoning
The verbal reasoning section comprises of three types of questions- Reading Comprehension, Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence. As per the GRE syllabus 2018, the Verbal Reasoning section measures a candidate’s ability to:

• Analyse and draw conclusions, understand and add value to incomplete data; identify the perception of the author;
•Identify vital points and differentiate between relevant and irrelevant points;
•Understand and summarise the structure of a text;
•Understand the given words, sentences and entire texts; ability to focus on the meaning of the entire sentence
•Understand relationships among words and among concepts.
Quantitative Reasoning
The Quantitative Reasoning section of GRE test evaluates a candidate’s ability to:
•Understand and analyse quantitative information
•Solve problems using mathematical models
•Interpret quantitative information appropriately
•Apply basic mathematical skills and concepts of Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry and Data Interpretation.
Analytical Writing
The Analytical Writing section of GRE exam evaluates a candidate’s ability to:
•Articulate complex ideas effectively and with clarity
•Support ideas with relevant reasons and examples
•Examine claims and accompanying evidence
•Sustain a well-focused, coherent discussion

Dates

There are no specific test dates for GRE General Test. The computer-based GRE Test 2018 is offered year-round at Prometric test centres. Aspirants can take the exam as per their requirement. They can take the GRE 2018 once every 21 days, up to five times within a 12-month period. This applies even if the candidate has cancelled his scores on a test taken previously. Also, the GRE test date 2018, depends on the availability of the test centre selected by the candidate. If the seats in the specific test centre is filled on that date, the aspirant has to either select a new date or go to a different test location. However, you have to first create a ‘My GRE Account’ in order to register for a specific date.


Application Form

To sit for GRE test, candidates have to first create a ‘My GRE Account’. You can apply for the GRE as well as check your scores in your account. For the GRE general test there are three ways to register which are: Online, Phone and Mail registration. Candidates can opt from Online and Mail registration in the case of GRE subject test.
