Concepts of Ranking Topic for CAT exam.

Short methods are the only way to pass the reasoning section of these competitive tests because time is a crucial aspect of success. Candidates can review the concepts, techniques, and recommendations for order and ranking questions here. It is always a situation of CND (can not determine) or the data is insufficient. If the total number of people is to be estimated and the positions of distinct people from any side are given.

When two people are positioned in a row, their positions are switched after switching, and the first person’s position is then given from the same side as before switching. It is always a situation of having given positions of people from either side overlap each other in problems where the goal is to discover the smallest number of people in a row.

Steps to solve the questions:

  1. Don not read the complete banking question paper in one go, read sentence by sentence and construct the logic accordingly.
  2. Order or Position will be either horizontal or vertical. Decide the direction of the arrangement.
  3. Consider all possible cases, but discard all except the correct one at the end to get the correct order or ranking.
  4. Non-consideration of all the possible cases will lead to the wrong order or ranking.
  5. Either use the ranking to get the total number of objects/people or use the total number to evaluate the ranking.
  6. Follow the processor arrangement in aright way; reverse engineering technique doesn’t work all the time to get the correct answer.

Tips To Solve Ranking Questions

  • Read the question carefully. If required, twice.
  • Note down the relevant information so that you don’t have to look at the question repeatedly.
  • Keep a stopwatch while you solve the order and ranking test questions to improve your speed.
  • Solve as many quizzes as possible. It will help you boost your confidence.
  • Practice as many types of order and ranking questions as in this way you will come across a variety of questions that will help you to broaden your thinking capability.

Seven rules to remember to solve ranking

Rule #1.

The total number of a person/objects in a group or class is equal to one less than the sum of the positions of the same person from both the ends (either right and left or top and bottom). Since the same person is counted twice in the sum, the final answer is one less than the total sum.

Rule#2

The total number of person/object in a group is the sum of before or after the given person in a row and the position of the same person from the other side. Total no. of persons/objects = No. of persons/objects before or after the given person in a row + Position of the same person from the other side..

Rule#3

If the positions of two objects/persons are given from the opposite ends and also the total number of persons/objects, then the problem can be addressed in two different ways to determine the number of persons between these two persons/objects.

Rule #4 Non-predictable order/ranking.

If the data in the question provides only then information of position different objects or persons then it is impossible to find the total number of objects or people in a group or class. As the cases can either be an overlapping or non-overlapping one. In such a situation, the final answer will always be found. Save the time by not trying to solve these type of questions.

Rule#5 Swapping of position to find the order/ ranking

In this section, the placement or the position of the two objects/persons are interchanged. The position of the two people or objects is examine before and after the interchanged. The place value or the position of the second person from the same side as before interchanging

= Position of 2nd person from the same side before interchanging + (Position of 1st person after interchanging – position of 1st person before interchanging from the same side)

Rule#6

If positions of two objects from opposite sides of the row are known there is a third object right in the middle of the two, then the total number of objects can be evaluated based on the position of the third object.

Rule#7

To find the minimum number of members in the group. The Minimum number of persons = Sum of positions of persons from both sides – Persons between them – 2.

Solved Examples for CAT

For example 1. In a class of 90, where girls are twice that of boys, Shushant ranked fourteenth from the top, if there are 10 girls ahead of Shushant, how many boys are after him in rank?

Girls = 2 Boys
Girls + Boys = 90
2 Boys + Boys = 90
3 Boys = 90 Boys = 30 and Girls = 60

Sushant – 14th From the top
There are 13 students ahead of him of which 10 are girls so no. of boys ahead of Shushant = is 13 – 10 = 3
No of the boys rank after him = 30 – 3 – 1(Shushant Himself)
= 30 – 4 = 26

For example 2. Fifteen girls are standing in a straight line facing North. Sudha is standing eleventh from the right end. Radha is standing ninth from the left end. Meena is standing exactly between Sudha and Radha. How many girls are standing on the right of Meena?

Solution: Sudha is standing eleventh from the right end
-,-,-,-, Sudha,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-,-
Radha is standing ninth from the left end
-,-,-,-, Sudha,-,-,-,Radha,-,-,-,-,-,-
Meena is standing exactly between Sudha and Radha.
-,-,-,-, Sudha,-,Meena,-,Radha,-,-,-,-,-,-
Hence there are 8 girls on the right of Meena.

For example 3. If Usha is taller than Nisha; Nisha is taller than Asha; Alka is taller than Usha. Harsha is shorter than Asha; then who among them is the tallest?

Usha > Nisha
Nisha > Asha
Alka > Usha
Asha > Harsha
=> Alka > Usha > Nisha > Asha > Harsha
So, Alka is the tallest amongst them.
