The Tale of F-Day : Mir Noaman Ali

A day of Leadership with Trust at TAS

About TAS: TAS (Formerly Tata Administrative Services) is the flagship leadership program of the Tata Group initiated in 1956 by Mr. J.R.D. Tata to tap young potential and create a pipeline of leaders who would go on to lead the group companies in the future. Tale of the first day: As a student of FMS Delhi, securing a summer internship with TAS was quite coveted and I’m glad to have had this chance. Our induction was scheduled on 3rd April at Vivanta by Taj-President, Cuffe Parade, Mumbai and we (a batch of 52 interns from some of the best B-schools in India) were provided accommodation in the same place since a day prior to the commencement of our internship.

It was followed by an hour long ice-breaker session in which all the internship candidates paired up and took turns to introduce their partner on the basis of a funny bone tickling questionnaire. We were addressed by TAS managers from the earlier batches of 2010, 2015 and 2016 who introduced us to the Tata Group and took us through their journeys of TAS program so far, right from their first year at the TATA Group to their evolution into senior personnel in their respective companies.

One of the key highlights of the induction program on day-1 was the keynote address by Mr. S Padmanabhan, the Chief Human Resources Officer of the Tata Group. To have been a part of the audience of that session was a privilege I’ll greatly cherish for the years to come.

We also had the opportunity to attend a highly educative and introspective session on “Power of brand TATA depicted through the TAJ Mahal 26/11 story” by Dr. P V Murthy, Senior Vice President & Global Head of Human Resources of Indian Hotels Company. The session left us all with goosebumps and a few with tears, as the loyalty and stakeholder mindset of Taj Mahal hotel employees was depicted through narration of their bravery and sacrifices during the unfortunate terrorist attack in 2008. It was followed by an inspiring and thought provoking session regarding what it is about the TATA group that inspired this superhuman level of loyalty from all of its hotel employees who were on duty that evening.

The last session of the day was an impactful and informative lecture by Mr.Harish Bhat, Brand Custodian of Tata Sons, the holding company of Tata Group. The session was about power of brand Tata illustrated by a few short stories from Mr. Bhat’s well acclaimed book “Tata Log” that talks about some of the most critical and pivotal situations that the Tata Group has been through in, its close to 150 year old journey and how the group has dealt with and overcome some of the gravest predicaments it has faced. We were asked to pen down our feelings on the regarding the forthcoming journey with TAS program of the TATA Group, on the whiteboards.

Post these sessions on the induction day, the batch of 52 interns dispersed to their respective project locations. Since my project location was in Mumbai itself (Trent-Strategy) I moved to a location closer to my office, for my stay during these two exciting months of internship. We retired to our respective rooms for the night, having been inducted to the prestigious TAS program of the TATA group and all charged up to deliver on our respective projects across group companies from the next day.
