Distance Learning Myths

There are many myths about distance learning courses. Most of them are baseless opinions. There’s very little truth in them. It is because of the fact that distance learning has come into light so quickly over the time that many people are not up to date with it hence with their limited knowledge they make such opinions.
For those who intend to pursue distance learning and are concerned about such myths, worry not. Following are the myths about distance learning with no grounding:

• Distance learning is expensive:
This point is valid to some extent. But that doesn’t mean that all quality online programs are expensive. There are also such courses which suit all interests and budgets across the globe. But if you compare it with the kinds of expenses incurred with traditional learning programs, distance learning is still a convenient option.

• Online courses have no value:
There are a plenty of distance learning courses that have accreditation, authorization and recognition in the market. They are approved by the national and international organizations of educational standards. However, there are some exceptions since there are many non-accredited online programs which are not regarded much in the job market.
Most online programs have high value and as a matter of fact in many working areas students with such degrees are preferred over traditional degrees.

• Online courses are stupid simple:
Many people think that distance learning is easy cake-walk and all they have to do is just log in for a while to show that they did watch the lecture. But in reality, different online courses differ in difficulty levels and are as demanding and rigorous as the traditional classrooms lectures.

• Online courses are for those who can’t get into good traditional courses:
Many think that distance learning courses are taken up by those who fail to get admission into good traditional colleges/universities. Ironic part is, good reputed colleges/universities offer distance learning courses as well.

• Distance learning is antisocial:
It is believed that in distance learning students lose out on the interactive and social skills which they would have otherwise acquired while learning in the traditional classroom. But this is a false myth! With the development in the technology used for distance learning there is a virtual classroom setup for students. Besides, students also have easy access to contact other students and teachers. They can easily sort their doubts and queries.

• The best tutors never choose online teaching:
As a matter of fact many teachers and professors who conduct online lectures are highly qualified and experienced who hail from good-reputed colleges/universities like Yale, Oxford, Boston Universities etc. Hence this myth is untrue since many excellent tutors also choose work in distance learning courses.

• Most online courses are scams:
It has never been a secret that there have been some fake online learning courses which existed only to defraud students. However, they represent only a tiny part of this domain. Most of the online learning courses are authorized and approved by the regional, national or international academic standards. Hence they are trustworthy and 100% legal.

Difference between Classroom MBA and Online MBA

In the current competitive corporate world, it is imperative to ensure a promising career. Top companies and firms hire those employees who have skilled in various domains of the company affairs, the most important being managerial skills. Today, the MBA course provides additional boost to a candidate’s credibility. Therefore, the candidates with an MBA degree are preferred for various jobs in the companies.

Cost factor: The most interesting feature of the online MBA is the cost factor. Here, both the colleges as well as the students have an advantage over this fact. Online programs save the college a lot of money, which would otherwise be spent for maintenance of the college. The students are also benefitted by this since they can do this while at work, there is an informal setting (since they can do it comfortably from home too) and have the college brand name on the CV.

Flexibility: In a traditional classroom MBA Program, the students (in case of colleges which do not have hostel facilities) have to go to a classroom for each class. One has to travel by public or private means. In case of private means one has to also find parking place and then run to the class. Going back home again takes that amount of time. While in an online program one can take classes from wherever he might be. It may be work, home or any random place.

Student-teacher communication: Though the Online MBA program is time saving and cost efficient, but it loses out on an important student-teacher interaction. Apart from that, they also miss out on networking opportunities with alumni and well-settled employees. An ideal tool of a classroom MBA program is that it lets its students interact with the real-life corporate world.

Peer interaction: An important aspect of a regular MBA is the peer group interaction. Peer group interaction is effective at its most only in a classroom and cannot be replaced fully by a virtual screen. Here the communication is via phone calls or text and hence the communication becomes asynchronous. This aspect is an important tool for communication and social skills and serves as an inspiration to be competent and successful in life.

Online MBA or Distance MBA

Very often we have searched through various MBA related sites and have come up with online MBA programs. This is a very feasible option for the ones who have personal or financial issues due to which they cannot attend the regular lectures. But still, most people question themselves whether the online MBA courses are really worth it or not. The question comes from the fact that the online MBA course is a complete virtual experience which does not offer peer interaction and social skills development as compared to the full-time, regular MBA.

However, MBA schools like Kelley Business School, Eller School of management have introduced this plan to offer to a virtual environment to the students to give them the feel of a classroom environment along with online mentoring. It’s a common myth that the Online MBA Program is not as legitimate or reasonable as the traditional MBA Program. But the truth is, as long as you choose a recognized program, that is not the case. As a matter of fact, there are some Online MBA Programs which are tougher than the traditional ones. There are many nationally recognized Business Schools which offer online MBA programs for students across different parts of the country.

However, Richard Lyons, the Dean of University of California Haas Business School (one of the top ranking and most respected business schools in the USA) believes that Online MBA programs might dominate the regular full-time MBA programs.

Dean Lyons points out that the revenue generated by students pursuing either Part Time MBA or Executive MBA constitutes the larger portion of revenue to the University. Hence, Online Programs could pose a tough competition to these Universities which could be shut down in the next 5-10 years.Throughout the years the debate was confined to part-time MBA vs online MBA or Executive MBA vs Online MBA. Traditional, full-time, classroom MBA program wasn’t involved into this discussion. But today, things have changed.
So what is better, Online MBA or Regular MBA? Well, it depends from the student to student. For students who require personal guidance and assistance from professors or lacks social and communication skills, than the traditional MBA is better as it is more convenient on the campus itself. In case if the candidate doesn’t have a flexible work schedule and travelling is a problem or has financial issues than Online MBA is better. Hence, before choosing which program to opt for it is important to examine one’s personal requirements.

Online MBA or Distance MBA

MBA becoming most sought after career option for students nowadays. Not only classroom MBA but also other modes of doing MBA have become popular these days like the online MBA and the Distance MBA. So lets have a look on the distinguishing aspects of these two.

Online MBA

  • In an online MBA program, one can interact virtually with classmates and instructors. Even if a person does not have much computer experience, this type of program has the added benefit of familiarizing yourself with technology.
  • These computer skills and the Internet could be very useful for the later part of the management career. You can experience much of the traditional classroom model – ask your instructor questions, talk to classmates and possibly view videos or listen to lectures (depending on the program).
  • An online MBA might have added flexibility: you could get a degree from an international school that gives you the same degree and the students on campus. Some institutions may also have placement services available, checking if your prospective programs provide this.
  • Talk to program counselors to see if a distance or an online MBA might work for you. While the details of a program differ from one school to another, many will offer a level of convenience that a traditional MBA does not.
  • Online MBA’s have the advantage of avoiding the postal system. You generally do not have to worry about materials or course books delayed when studying online. Each MBA could provide information relevant to your career and your future professional ambitions.

Distance MBA

  • In the distance MBA, learning is usually done via material sent by post. Remote MBA programs include specific books and school programs.
  • Additional materials or resources may be available depending on the program and your regional settings, such as in-person courses.
  • These self-learning programs allow you to learn independently and at your convenience. Keep in mind that you will have to pay a postage fee for materials at admission.
  • How do you conduct exams when you are doing a remote MBA? Although options vary by school, you can take the exam by mail, online through the school’s website or at a local test center.
  • Please note that some programs correspond to the terms remote program and online program, although they are actually different. Some programs may advertise distance or correspondence courses, but in fact have an online learning component or platform.
  • If the paper size is what you are looking for, make sure that your program does not include online components.
