IIM Shillong Interview, the Cutoff 2020 is the minimum marks required to qualify for getting a call from the institute to participate in the further rounds of admission. The candidates interested in pursuing management courses from IIM Shillong will be required to appear for CAT 2020 and clear the cutoff for getting shortlisted. Apart from the cutoff, IIM-S uses multiple parameters for shortlisting the candidates such as past academic performance in 10th, 12th & graduation, work experience, etc. The shortlisted candidates are then required to appear for the Writing Skills Assessment Test (WSAT) and Personal Interview (PI).

Personal Observations:

  • Introduction: None asked.
  • Hobbies: No questions on this.
  • Performance:
    • Some answers were given well.
    • For others, I spoke less.
    • On a few, I had no idea, which was evident from their expressions.
  • Self-assessment:
    • Confidence level was good throughout.
    • However, overall performance was not up to the mark due to lack of general awareness and history knowledge, as most questions were from these areas.

When I asked ki kya bola so ma’am laughed and said that your interview is over and you can exit.
(All questions were easy and they seemed satisfied. Only issue was voice. I don’t know how they perceived it.)

    • (I mentioned the Buddhist temples and various other things.)

  • F1: What is the origin of Buddhism?

    • (Don’t know.)

  • F1: Trade between India and Bangkok?

  • F1: The Union Budget came out recently. What are the changes seen as compared to last year?

    • (Told and mentioned the increase from ₹5 lakhs to ₹7 lakhs exemption and that it will benefit 1 crore people if they decide not to opt for deductions.)

  • F1: So if we collect less tax, how will the economy benefit from it?

    • (Said that people will have more money with them for investment; should have said more spending power.*)

  • F1: I was travelling in Uber yesterday, and the cab driver said that he will cancel the booking for the app and I should pay him with cash. If you were in the top management at Uber, what would you do?

    • (I will talk to him and try to understand why he is doing so.)

  • F1: You know why he is doing so. He wants to keep all the money in his pocket, and he has a family to feed.

    • (Ma’am, in that case, I would have to lay him off as he has acquired a customer through my website/app, so what he is doing is not ethically correct; could have mentioned giving a warning.*)

  • F1: How can unorganised businesses be monitored? They earn in crores but don’t pay taxes.

    • (Ma’am, in my knowledge, there is no such policy as of now, but with digitalization and the increase in UPI payments where a part of their earnings goes directly into the bank, that part can be monitored.)

  • F1: What do you do in your free time?

    • (Told, no cross-questions.)
  • M1: Tell me 5 of your favourite subjects.
    • (Told, and he picked macroeconomics. I was so happy as that was the only subject I was comfortable with.)
  • Spoke about the growth of the economy, how it is one of the fastest-growing economies, and how all economies are starting to get on par with the pre-COVID level, but India is on its path to surpass it.
  • Mentioned that this growth is because of the large amount of domestic consumption.
  • M1: As you mentioned domestic consumption, there are three types of economies – consumption-based, export-based, investment-based. Classify.
    • (I gave an example of China in export-based and explained it. I explained investment-based but couldn’t think of an example.)
  • M1: Is the US consumption-based or investment-based?
    • (I said I didn’t mention the US as I wasn’t sure if it is investment-based or consumption-based, but if I had to take a guess, I would say it is investment-based. (It is consumption-based.))
  • Mentioned how FIIs are pulling out their money from the Indian market and putting it in the Chinese market as the Indian market is overvalued; its P/E ratio touched almost 18-20% as compared to China, which has a P/E ratio of just 10%.
  • Some more cross-questioning was done on the Indian economy.
  • M1: That’s it from our side, thank you.
  • F1: You can take a chocolate from the bowl.

    • (He didn’t seem to know much about it and Googled some random stuff to ask. Couldn’t answer much.)

  • M: Asked about economics: GDP, GDP per capita, GNP, GNP per capita, PPP, HDI, Happiness Index.

    • Q: From the above list, which is the best indicator of the state of an economy?
      • (I wasn’t sure, so I went with GDP.)
    • Q: Is it possible for a country to have a high GDP and at the same time be in a bad economic condition?
      • (I said yes and mentioned points like inflation and disproportionate distribution of income.)
    • Q: What if a country has high GDP and a high population at the same time?
      • (GDP per capita would be low.)
    • Q: So now what do you think is the best indicator of an economy?
      • (I said GDP again but wasn’t really sure.)

  5. Ask about India’s policy regarding Mauritius, Nepal, Bangladesh, China and how are the relations between the nations (I had mentioned interest in political happenings in India but she asked all about international things)
  6. Asked about Paytm IPO like what had happened and why it failed and all then latest update on it (Macquarie upgraded it from underperforming to outperforming and so shares jumped up)

2nd Panelist

All about acads

  1. Explain IC engine and EV working and what’s different
  2. Told to explain the Diesel Cycle along with the diagram of the cycle. Some cross questions on it
  3. Went to manufacturing  process – wasn’t good at this at all. She went into very technical questions on different process (around 4 to 5 que on this and couldn’t answer any)
  4. Ask abt my gap year after grads and what I did during that time
  5. Asked about my BTech Project and went into details of it (looked like panelist was of Mech background with very sound knowledge)

Overall a good one except for acad questions on manufacturing domain. Panelist were not grilling and were patient. 

One thing that was common for almost everyone there was that they are asking on Acads and GK Current Affairs (can be around  till 6 months old as well). So a suggestion to be updated with it.
