IIM Selection Process and Admission Criteria

The IIM selection process is based on three main criteria: CAT score, WAT/GD-PI performance, and candidate’s academic record. After the release of the IIM cut-off, the IIM admission process is conducted in the following three phases:

  • Phase 1: Shortlisting of candidates based on CAT percentile.
  • Phase 2: Candidate’s participation in WAT and PI.
  • Phase 3: Final selection based on performance in the CAT, WAT-PI, academics, etc.

IIM Admission Parameters and Weightage

IIMs consider various parameters during the admission process. The table below presents the parameters and their weightage for IIM admissions:

Parameters Weightage (in%)
CAT score, WAT/PI 75
Academic Profile 10
Work Experience 10
Gender Diversity 5
Total 100

Factors Affecting IIM Cut-Off

The IIM cut-off varies slightly each year due to several factors. The most prominent factors affecting IIM cut-off are as follows:

  • Difficulty Level of the CAT: If the exam is more difficult, the IIM cut-off percentile is lower because the average scores tend to be lower. In contrast, a relatively easier CAT exam results in a higher IIM cut-off.
  • No. of CAT Test Takers: The IIM cut-off percentile also depends on the number of candidates attempting the exam. A higher number of test takers usually leads to a higher cut-off percentile, and vice versa.
