Admission Process

Here are the key highlights of the admission process for an MBA from IITs:

  • Eligibility Criteria for MBA from IITs: A graduate in Engineering or other disciplines with 60 per cent marks is the minimum academic eligibility for MBA from IIT. While IIT Kharagpur and IIT Kanpur need a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Maths or Science, other IITs including IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay accept a Bachelor’s Degree in any discipline with 60 per cent marks.
  • Mandatory Entrance Exam: IITs accept only CAT exam scores for MBA Admission 
  • How to Apply for Admission to MBA from IITs? Apart from taking the CAT exam, you should apply separately for MBA admission to each IIT. 
  • Selection Process for IITs MBA Admission: IITs shortlist candidates based on CAT exam score, profile and work experience. IITs conduct PI-WAT in the final selection round. MBA from IITs – What are the median/average placement and fees?

Shortlist Criteria for MBA Admission in IITs

Each IIT has its shortlist criteria for the final selection round and has different CAT cut-offs as detailed above. For example, IIT Delhi and IIT Bombay will shortlist the candidates based on CAT 2024 score, past academic performance and other criteria as decided by their admission committee. Few other IITs will consider only overall CAT exam scores and a few, like IIT Bombay, may consider sectional CAT scores also. 

 

Final Selection Process for Admission to MBA from IITs

IITs conduct Personal Interview (PI) and Writing Ability Test (WAT) in their final selection process and award high weightage to the performance in both these components. For the last few years, IIT Delhi has discontinued the WAT process. IIT Kanpur also conducts the Group Discussion in its MBA Admission. The PI round is 10 to 20 minutes duration while WAT is about 20 to 30 minutes duration in the MBA admission process at IITs. 

How to Apply for MBA Admission in IITs?  

Before applying for an MBA in IIT, you need to apply and appear in CAT 2024. Post this, you must apply to each IIT for MBA Admission separately. Unless you have applied and appeared in CAT, you will not be considered for IIT MBA Admission 2025. You also need to enter your CAT 2024 score in the IIT MBA Application form. 

  • IIT Application Fees is Rs.1600 for MBA Admission for General, OBC and EWS category candidates
  • For SC/ST/PwD category candidates, the application fee for IIT MBA admission is Rs.800
