Is MBA from IIT worth it? | Summer internship report
May 31 2024

Whether an MBA from an IIT is worth it depends on your goals and priorities.

Pros:

  • Strong Alumni Network: IITs boast a large and well-connected alumni base that can be valuable for job opportunities, mentorship, and professional connections.
  • Focus on Tech and Innovation: Many IIT MBA programs have a strong focus on technology and innovation, which can be especially appealing if you're interested in these areas.
  • Comparatively Lower Fees: IITs generally have lower tuition fees compared to some of the top Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs).

Cons:

  • Newer Programs: IITs' MBA programs are relatively new compared to established B-schools like IIMs. This may mean a less developed alumni network and brand recognition among recruiters.
  • Limited Intake: IIT MBA programs often have smaller student intakes compared to IIMs. This can limit the diversity of your classmates and networking opportunities.

Many people are joining IIT this time, and there are no issues with the top IITs like IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi. However, some people are a bit worried about going to the lower-ranked ones like Roorkee, Kharagpur, Kanpur, etc.

IIT Bombay

IIT Bombay, founded in 1958, has established itself as a premier world class teaching and research institution in technology and interdisciplinary programmes. About twenty percent of its alumni are entrepreneurs- many of them first generation. The pre-eminence of the Institute is evident from its varied and effective academic programmes for manpower development to meet the rapidly changing needs of the Organizations.

Placements:

The latest update from IIT Kharagpur is that the summer internship report has been released. The median stipend is 6.45 lakhs, and 45 companies came on campus for a batch of approximately 137 students. If each company is taking around three students, life is going to be good. The average stipend amount is 2 lakhs, and the highest stipend amount is 5.35 lakhs at IIT Kharagpur. This is specifically for the MBA program, with companies like Accenture, BCG, and D.E. Shaw participating. My assumption is that D.E. Shaw is one of the companies actively hiring from IIT Kharagpur.
