About GRE exam Graduate Record Examination is a test taken by students who plan to apply to graduate school. It measures a student’s basic abilities in math, reading and essay writing. The results of this test are sent to graduate schools along with transcripts, a student’s application, statement of purpose essay and letters of recommendation.
GRE test duration The test duration is about three hours and forty-five. Sixty minutes are allotted to complete verbal reasoning part. An hour and ten minutes to complete the quantitative section. Sixty minutes are further allotted to complete the analytical writing section. GRE test fee There is a fee of $195.00 to take the GRE.
GRE test structure The GRE test is divided into three main sections. The Analytical Writing section is always presented first. Remaining two sections are Quantitative and Verbal. They appear in any order and also include unscored and research sections. In this section, your answers on these won't count towards your score, but since you won't know which questions are legitimate and which aren't, you should treat every portion of the test as if it counts.
When to take GRE? Some undergraduate students take it during their third year. Many students take the GRE a year before they graduate so they can concentrate on mid-terms and final exams during their senior year. The range of scores for each of those two sections runs from 130 to 170 possible points.
On the analytical writing section of the exam, student can score from 0 to 6 points. GRE score validity A student’s GRE scores are valid for five years. For students who want to take some time off before starting work, this becomes very useful. Frequency of taking GRE test A student can take the GRE up to five times in 12 months. However, taking the exam several times in a period of 12 months may cause graduate schools to take an average of the scores on multiple GREs belonging to one student.
Analytical writing section of the GRE test For the first part of the Analytical Writing section, you must read a paragraph on a general issue and then address that topic as you deem fit for the next 45 minutes. The key element to completing the section well is ability to support your views with sound reasoning and examples. Like the rest of the GRE exam, the writing section is not computer-adaptive. You may use a computer to complete it won’t score your essays as for this section, your scores are not determined by computer but by real person.
Verbal section of the GRE test The Verbal section of the GRE includes questions on sentence completions, analogies, antonyms, and reading comprehension questions. The purpose is to test your ability to recognize relationships between concepts and words, form conclusions from written materials and to determine relationships between different parts of sentences. Math section of the GRE test The Quantitative section of the GRE are designed to test high-school-level math. Start honing your skills in arithmetic, geometry, algebra and data analysis. This section of the exam aims to test your ability to use quantitative reasoning and also to solve a variety of different math problems.
