IIM Ahmedabad Admission 2027: Complete Guide to Every Program

IIM Ahmedabad doesn't run one single admission process, it runs a separate one for each program it offers, each with its own entrance test, its own timeline, and its own selection formula. There's no central counselling body deciding who gets in, every program builds its own shortlist and its own merit list independently. This guide walks through all of them: the flagship two-year PGP (MBA), PGP-FABM, the one-year PGPX for working professionals, the newer blended and specialised programs, and the Doctoral Program, along with the scholarships tied to each.

A few things hold true across every program here. There's no domicile or state-level quota anywhere at IIM Ahmedabad. Reservation follows the standard Government of India norms, 27% NC-OBC, 15% SC, 7.5% ST, 5% PwD, and up to 10% EWS. And if you're planning to submit a GMAT or GRE score for any program, it has to be from a test-centre attempt, online or take-home scores aren't accepted anywhere at IIMA.

Quick admission snapshot for 2027 intake:

  • PGP & PGP-FABM (2027-29 batch): Applications run through CAT 2026, registration closing around September 22, 2026.

  • MBA in Business Analytics & AI: Round 1 applications open September to November 2026.
  • PhD (Doctoral Program): Applications open September 2026 through mid-January 2027.

The Post Graduate Program in Management is IIM-A's flagship two-year, full-time course, effectively its MBA. For the 2027-29 batch, every domestic applicant goes through CAT 2026 first, then IIMA's own shortlisting, followed by an Analytical Writing Test (AWT) and a Personal Interview (PI).

PGP Eligibility

You need a bachelor's degree involving at least three years of study after 10+2. General category candidates need a minimum of 50% marks or the equivalent CGPA, SC, ST, and PwD candidates need 45%. Final-year students can apply too, provisionally, and you'll need to be at least 19 years old by June 30, 2027.

PGP CAT 2026 Cutoffs

Category Overall (Non-PwD) Sectional (Non-PwD) Overall (PwD) Sectional (PwD)
General / EWS 95 85 85 75
NC-OBC 90 80 80 70
SC 85 75 75 65
ST 75 65 65 55

Clearing this cutoff only makes you eligible to be scored, it doesn't guarantee an interview call.

PGP Selection Process: How the Score Actually Works

The process runs in two stages, and how you're scored changes completely between them.

Stage 1, getting the interview call: Once you clear the eligibility bar and CAT cutoff, your marks and CAT score are blended into a Raw Composite Score.

Component Weight
CAT 2026 Total Percentile 65%
Normalized Application Rating (academics + work-ex + gender) 35%

Your Application Rating itself is built from five scores added together: Class 10 marks, Class 12 marks, graduation marks, work experience, and a gender-diversity point. This gets normalized against the applicant pool first, then the resulting composite score gets normalized a second time, this time against candidates from your own undergraduate discipline, not the whole pool.

This second normalization is where the real change for 2027-29 sits. Previously, IIMA grouped applicants into 6 broad Academic Categories. Now it's comparing you against 20 specific undergraduate disciplines instead, so the peer group your marks get measured against has gotten a lot more precise. The old minimum "P" score and the 80th-percentile graduation cutoff have also been dropped entirely.

Check the official IIMA PGP Admission Policy 2027-29 PDF for the exact wording of every rule below.

Here are all 20 disciplines IIMA now normalizes candidates against:

Fashion & Design Computer Science & IT
Commerce, Accounting & Finance Medical & Health Sciences
Statistics & Actuarial Science Economics
Agriculture & Allied Sciences Social Sciences
Arts & Humanities Hospitality & Food Sciences
Architecture & Planning Journalism & Media
Life Sciences Law
Engineering & Technology Mathematics
Management Others
Pure Sciences Professional (CA/CS/ICWA/FIAI)

If you happen to hold more than one undergraduate degree across different disciplines, IIMA actually calculates a separate raw composite score for each one and uses whichever normalized score comes out highest for your shortlisting.

Stage 2, final selection: Once you clear the interview shortlist, the formula resets completely.

Component Weight
Normalized Personal Interview (PI) Score 50%
Normalized Composite Score (from Stage 1) 40%
Normalized AWT Score 10%

Final selection happens separately within each reservation category. In plain terms, CAT gets you into the interview room, but once you're there, the interview itself decides most of what happens next.

How to Apply for PGP 2027-29

Register for CAT 2026, fill in your personal, academic, and work-experience details accurately, select IIM Ahmedabad's PGP while completing the CAT application, choose your preferred AWT/PI cities, pay the CAT fee, and track the IIMA shortlist after your CAT result comes out.

IIM Ahmedabad PGP-FABM Admission 2027-29

The Post Graduate Program in Food & Agri-Business Management runs through the same CAT 2026 route, followed by its own shortlisting, AWT, and PI. Candidates from an agricultural or agriculture-related academic background get preference during shortlisting, though non-agriculture candidates can and do get in too.

PGP-FABM Eligibility

Candidate Type Qualification Note
Agriculture background Bachelor's/Master's in agricultural sciences, min 50% Gets preference in shortlisting
Non-agriculture background Any bachelor's/master's, min 50% Must submit a special interest form if shortlisted
SC / ST / PwD Same as above, min 45% Standard relaxation applies

Final-year candidates can apply provisionally but need to finish all degree requirements by June 30, 2027, and submit the final marksheet by December 31, 2027. Minimum age is 19 by June 30, 2027.

PGP-FABM CAT 2026 Cutoffs

Category AC-1 & 2 (Overall/Sectional) AC-3, 4 & 5 (Overall/Sectional)
General / EWS 90 / 70 95 / 75
NC-OBC 85 / 65 90 / 70
SC / ST 70 / 60 75 / 65

AC-1 and AC-2 cover agriculture and allied disciplines; AC-3 through AC-5 cover life sciences, commerce, engineering, and other backgrounds. A positive raw score in every CAT section is compulsory here, not just the overall cutoff.

PGP-FABM Selection Process

Shortlisting works off a Composite Score: 65% Normalized CAT Score plus 35% Application Rating Score. The twist here is that FABM calculates its Normalized CAT Score using all three CAT sections separately, QA, DILR, and VARC, each normalized against the top 50 scores in that section, then averaged. So unlike the flagship PGP, all three sections weigh in equally before CAT's overall 65% share applies.

The Application Rating Score adds up Class 10, Class 12, graduation marks, and work experience, divided by 35. Work experience here scores 0 below 12 months, rises gradually between 12 and 36 months, and caps at 5 points beyond 36 months.

Final selection weighs 50% Composite Score, 40% Personal Interview, and 10% AWT. Non-agriculture candidates who get shortlisted are only provisionally shortlisted, they need to submit a special interest form (usually within five days of the shortlist) explaining their interest in the program, or the candidature gets cancelled.

IIM Ahmedabad PGPX Admission 2027-28

PGPX is the one-year, full-time program built for experienced professionals, minimum 4 years of full-time work experience after graduation. Admission for the 2027-28 batch runs in two rounds, and you can only apply once across both rounds.

Event Round 2
Application Window September 3 - November 23, 2026
Shortlist Announcement December 4, 2026
Essay & Resume Submission December 4-6, 2026
Personal Interview December 2026 - January 2027
Final Selection January 22, 2027

Eligibility needs a bachelor's degree in any discipline, 15 years of education under the 10+2+3 or 10+2+4 system, minimum age 25 by March 31, 2027, no upper age limit, and a valid GMAT or GRE score (including GMAT Focus Edition) taken within the last five years, from a test centre, not online. Shortlisting weighs standardized test scores and your leadership profile, shortlisted candidates then submit essays and sit a face-to-face panel interview covering professional background, career progression, leadership potential, and overall fit for the program.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. What CAT percentile do I need for IIM Ahmedabad in 2027?

95th percentile overall for General and EWS candidates, with 85th percentile in each section, that's the published minimum floor. In practice, the score that actually gets you an interview call tends to run meaningfully higher than this cutoff.

Q2. Is CAT compulsory, or can I use GMAT/GRE for IIM Ahmedabad?

CAT is compulsory for the PGP and PGP-FABM if you're a domestic candidate. GMAT or GRE only comes into play for PGPX and a few of the specialised blended programs.

Q3. Can final-year students apply to IIM Ahmedabad?

Yes, across nearly every program here. You'll need a certificate from your college confirming your final-year status, and admission stays provisional until you submit your actual degree marksheet.

Q4. Is work experience necessary for the PGP?

No, freshers get admitted every year into the PGP. Work experience only adds points to your Application Rating, it caps out at 5 points once you cross 36 months, and freshers simply score 0 on this one component while competing normally on the rest.

Q5. Does IIM Ahmedabad have a management quota or direct admission route?

No. Every seat goes through the published, merit-based selection process. There's no donation seat, no management quota, and no direct-admission shortcut at IIM Ahmedabad for any program.

Q6. How is the final merit list actually calculated?

For the PGP 2027-29 batch, it's 50% Personal Interview, 40% Normalized Composite Score (which itself already reflects your CAT and academic profile), and 10% AWT. Selection then happens separately within each reservation category.

Q7. Can an average student realistically get into IIM Ahmedabad?

Yes, though it takes a genuinely strong CAT score to offset an average academic record, since the composite score does weigh your Class 10, 12, and graduation marks alongside CAT. A high CAT percentile combined with a solid interview performance can absolutely outweigh a middling academic history.

Q8. Does IIM Ahmedabad give extra points to female candidates?

Yes, IIMA adds gender-diversity points to a candidate's Application Rating for non-male candidates. It's one part of a larger composite score, not a standalone deciding factor.

Q9. How many students does IIM Ahmedabad admit each year?

The PGP batch typically runs to around 400-plus students, with PGP-FABM admitting a smaller cohort alongside it. The exact number isn't a fixed sanctioned figure and shifts slightly year to year.

Q10. What's the application fee for IIM Ahmedabad's PGP?

There's no separate IIMA application fee for the PGP, you pay the standard CAT registration fee, which is lower for SC, ST, and PwD candidates.
