Banaras Hindu University made remarkable contributions not only to the freedom movements but to the creation of modern India too. It was grooming ground for many great freedom fighters. The University produced myriads of renowned scholars, artists, scientists and technologists who were instrumental in building modern India. Spread across an area of 4000 acres of land in two different campuses, BHU is the largest residential university in Asia. A home to 3 institutes, 16 faculties, 140 departments, 4 advanced centers and 4 interdisciplinary schools covering almost all streams of knowledge known to mankind.
Bharat Kala Bhavan, the reputed museum of the University, is a treasure trove of rare collections. Near one thousand bed hospital is equipped with all the modern amenities. University provides a wide range of facilities including separate medical complexes for students and staff, sports and hobbies centers, Internet facilities and units like Public Relations Cell, Printing Press, Preservation Centres, Agricultural research farms, Poultry Farms, Pisciculture, Radio Station, Petrol Pump, ATMs, Banks, Post Office, Subsidized Canteens, a NCC barrack and its own Security Force.
The University family comprises of near 30000 students belonging to different streams of life, castes, religions and races, about 2000 teachers and nearly 5000 non-teaching staff. A large number of students from over 30 foreign countries like the US, Russia, European countries, Asia, Africa and the Middle East come here to learn about a wonder named INDIA.
Today the University is known for its state-of-art campus, environment, academic standards, facilities, values and culture. In a recent survey conducted by India Today Nielsen (released in India Today, May 31, 2010 issue), BHU Ranked No. 1 University in India.
