Among the greatest myths that we hear at CATKing is that GMAT is solely helpful when studying outside the country. The fact is actually opposite. Although most international MBAs require the GMAT for admission, it is also the strongest entry point to gaining acceptance to the elite executive business schools in India, especially to those who have had 2-3 plus years of work experience. And, for final-year undergraduates, the GMAT opens up deferred admit opportunities which secure your MBA admission before you even commence your career.

When you are considering CAT vs. GMAT, keep this in mind: a high score on GMAT will open doors for you to ISB, SPJIMR, all IIM 1-year executive MBAs, MDI, XLRI, BITSoM, Masters Union and every other top-ranked program in the world at once. Only a few of the Indian flagship programs and the 2-year IIMs allow students with a strong CAT score only. The GMAT has more options strictly in the case of working professionals with more than 24 months of experience.

ISB Deep Dive

ISB is worthy of a section of its own as it is the most GMAT oriented MBA in India. PGP, the flagship one year program offered by ISB is based at Hyderabad and Mohali and the main entrance examination is the GMAT. For ISB Class of 2025, the average GMAT score of the Class was around 710 on the old scale (around 655 to 665 on the Focus Edition).

ISB does not publish hard cutoffs, but tracking data of admits shows: a 645 on the Focus Edition (around 700 on the old scale) puts you in a competitive pool, a 675 makes your score a non-issue, and 685 and up opens serious conversations about scholarship. Below 635, you require an extraordinary profile (uniqueness of work experience, essays and community impact) to counter the score.

The Global Landscape: US, UK, Europe, and Asia-Pacific

US M7 and Top 15

The M7 includes Harvard Business school, Stanford GSB, Wharton, Chicago Booth, Kellogg, Columbia and MIT Sloan. Safe baseline score: 685 or more on the Focus Edition (730 or more on old scale). Nevertheless, the US schools greatly index on the essays, recommendations and leadership story alongside the score. That means a 685 with a poor profile can still be rejected; or that a 655 with an outstanding story can still receive admit. The next level beyond M7 (Tuck, Darden, Yale SOM, Duke Fuqua, Ross, Stern, Johnson, Haas)  is competitive with a plus of 665.

European Giants

The European market of MBA is dominated by INSEAD, London Business School, HEC Paris, IESE and IE Business School. One year is the typical duration of these programs as working professionals who may not afford two years off are attracted to them. In European programs, international exposure, language skills and global mobility are appreciated in addition to scores. The Focus Edition with a 665 and above is very competitive. INSEAD in particular seeks a high Quant score due to its challenging finance and analytics program, and so looks to have a high Quant percentile, i.e. above 80.

Asia-Pacific

The top GMAT-accepting programs in Asia-Pacific are NUS Singapore, NTU Singapore, HKUST Hong Kong, CEIBS Shanghai and Melbourne Business School. The typical Cutoffs begin at 625 on the Focus Edition and average admissions scores of 655 to 665. Indian applicants are especially at home with these programs and are close, have cost structures and well developed regional employment networks.

Deferred Admit Pathways for Freshers

Some of the most competitive MBA admissions pathways are available to final-year undergraduates and recent graduates, via deferred admissions programs. These programs allow you to book your MBA seat, and join after 2 to 4 years of work experience.

·       ISB Young Leaders Programme (YLP): final-year college students apply, but are deferred until they have 20 to 24 months of work experience. Focus Edition: target score 645 and above.

·       The gold standard is: Harvard Business School 2 plus 2. Apply in last year, work 2-4 years prior to joining HBS. Target score 685 plus.

·       Wharton Moelis Advance access: a 2 to 4 year deferral similar to HBS 2 plus 2. Target 685 plus.

·       Stanford GSB Deferred Enrollment: smallest and most selective. Target 695 plus.

·       Yale SOM Silver Scholars: 1 year MBA, 1 year internship, 1 year. To freshers wishing to join the MBA immediately.

The strategic advantage of deferred admits can be summarized as follows: You take the GMAT during your final year of college when test-taking discipline is the highest and secure your MBA outcome before career uncertainties, design your work experience around the eventual MBA rather than the other way round.

How B-Schools Actually Use Your GMAT Score

The most widespread myth is that you can get in with your GMAT score alone. It does not. The score is among four or five key signals which are used by admissions committees. The following is the honest weightages for most of the leading programs:

·       25-30 percent for the work experience quality and progression.

·       Essays, story coherence: 20 to 25 percent

·       GMAT score and academic record: 20 to 25 percent

·       Recommendation letters: 10 to 15 percent

·       Performance in the interviews: 10 to 15 percent

It would suffice if you hit the median score of the school. Scoring 30 points higher than the median would rarely turn an admit decision around with a weak essay or work experience. Give attention to the clearing the threshold then focus energy on profile strength.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What GMAT score do I need for ISB?

A: Hard cutoffs are not published by ISB. Based on tracked admit information a 645 on the Focus Edition (approximately 700 on old scale) would place you in a competitive pool. Your score won’t be an issue when it is 675 plus. Anything below 635, and you would have to compensate with an outstanding profile. The mean GMAT that ISB admits have is 655-665 on the Focus Edition.

Q: Can freshers apply to Indian B-schools with a GMAT score?

A: Yes. Freshers have the opportunity to apply to ISB YLP in their final year and defer admissions until 20 plus months of work experience. Other institutions, including BITSoM, Masters' Union and Great Lakes PGDM, also accept GMAT scores alongside CAT or XAT, from applicants with little or no work experience.

Q: What GMAT score do I need for HBS 2 plus 2?

A: HBS does not have hard cutoffs published, but tracked admits indicates a target of 685 plus on the Focus Edition (around 730 old scale). Indian admits are typically graduates or undergraduates of the most prestigious schools of engineering and they have demonstrated leadership outside the classroom. Score is required but is not enough; the strength of the profile is as important as score.

Q: Can I apply to an MBA with a 625 Focus Edition score?

A: Yes, with realistic choice of school. IIM Kozhikode EPGP, IIM Indore EPGP, MDI Executive, Great Lakes PGXPM, and many of the Asia-Pacific programs such as NUS and HKUST allow applicants with good work experience. It is a stretch for ISB, SPJIMR or the M7, but not disqualifying with strong profile differentiators.

Q: How long before the application deadline should I take the GMAT?

A: Provide yourself with at least 60 days between the date of your GMAT and the date of your earliest application deadline. This buffer means you can take a retake, should your initial score not be as good as you can achieve with active test preparation, and leaves you with time to write essays without active test preparation. Ideally, complete the GMAT as early as August should you be targeting September and October Round 1 deadlines.

Q: Do scholarship amounts depend on GMAT score?

A: The decision to give scholarship in most Indian B-schools is based on the overall profile strength and not on the score alone. A high GMAT score (above 685 on the Focus Edition) is often mentioned as a minimum for merit scholarship consideration at ISB, SPJIMR and various other programs worldwide. A high score does not mean that you are guaranteed of a scholarship but it initiates a dialogue.

Q: Should I take the GMAT in my third year or final year of undergrad?

A: The typical target is final year; normally between the months of August and December of your last year of academic work. Most deferred admit applications are not mature enough in 3rd year as the application materials have to be almost final. Some highly ambitious candidates do take it in third year as practice, and retake in final year.

Q: Can I use one GMAT score for multiple MBA applications?

A: Yes. During registration, individuals are offered five free score reports to send to five schools. Additional reports are charged at USD 35 per report. A score remains valid for five years, and one can use the same score in more than one application round and more than one program without having to retake the test.
