When you are embarking on the MBA journey, the amount of conflicting information available regarding GMAT can be more than daunting. Sentence Correction is still a topic discussed in forums. YouTube thumbnails continue to promise to teach you to crack GMAT 800. Half of the coaching brochures in India have not been updated since 2022. The truth is much more basic than all the commotion indicates.
We have assisted hundreds of applicants to gain an understanding of three foundational questions before they are going to spend a rupee in prep: What is the GMAT today? Will it be more beneficial to me than GRE? Is it a replacement to CAT or a complement? This guide will answer all the three so that you can make a clean decision in one evening rather than agonizing over three weeks.
The GMAT Focus Edition: What Is Actually on the Test
Since the end of 2023, the GMAT Focus Edition has been the only version of the test in use. It is a 2 hour and 15 minutes computer adaptive test which is designed to help assess executive level reasoning as opposed to rote learning. There are 64 questions in three 45 minute parts, order of which you can select yourself.
Quantitative Reasoning (21 Questions)
No calculator allowed and pure arithmetic and algebra. There is no geometry at all, no circles, triangles, coordinate planes or solids. The percentages, ratios, rates, work, mixtures, quadratic inequalities and number properties are expected to carry heavy weightage.
Verbal Reasoning (23 Questions)
Only Reading Comprehension and Critical Reasoning. Sentence Correction no longer exists which implies you will no longer need to memorise idioms, rules of pronouns and position of modifiers. Passages are 200 to 400 words with one question focused on each passage. CR arguments run 80 to 120 words with one focused question on each argument.
Data Insights (20 Questions)
This is the latest and underestimated section. It has a built-in calculator on-screen, and examines five different question types, which include: Data Sufficiency, Multi-Source Reasoning, Table Analysis, Graphics Interpretation, and Two-Part Analysis. Imagine it was the closest that the GMAT can be to re-creating an actual corporate desk.
The 205 to 805 Score Scale
The largest discontinuity for most aspirants is the new scoring scale. The gold-standard was a 700 on the old GMAT. Nowadays, there is no such score. All Focus Edition ends in 5, and the scale is purposely crafted not to project onto the old format.

Do NOT panic when you check B-school class profiles with average scores of 720 or 730. Most of these institutions continue to release old-format average scores. Check on the current class profile PDF or admissions FAQ, and not the marketing banner.
Cost, Registration, and Score Validity
GMAC administers the test and you need to register via mba.com. The centre-based exam in India costs USD 275 (nearly Rs 23000 -25000), whilst the online version at home costs USD 300 (approximately Rs 27000-28000). The fee of rescheduling is USD 55 to USD 165 based on the distance between the actual and the desired test date.
Your GMAT score is valid for five years. You are free to take up to five attempts within any rolling 12 months period, but not more than eight attempts in a lifetime. The required minimum gap between the successive attempts is 16 days. With the registration fee, you can submit your score to five business schools with no additional fee. Extra reports will be USD 35 each.
GMAT vs GRE: The Quick Take
More than 95 percent of the top MBA programs accepts both the GMAT and GRE, and will not reject you if you choose one or the other. Fit is the actual question. Created by GMAC exclusively for business schools, the GMAT has each section examining the skills that you will use in an MBA. The GRE is an exam that is a generalist test for all graduate programs.
The GMAT has a more clearer benchmark for Indian B-schools. The target of 645 to 685 on the Focus Edition (approximately 700 on the old scale), is clearly established by ISB, though it does not provide a specific cutoff with reference to GRE. The GRE is approximately USD 55 cheaper per attempt and is more beneficial in case you are also applying to MS programs concurrently.
Select the GMAT when you are targeting pure MBA programs (particularly Indian B- Schools), have an engineering background and want a clear benchmark. Consider taking the GRE when you are also applying for MS programs, have a background in the humanities with a solid vocabulary, or are especially price-conscious.
GMAT vs CAT: The Quick Take
The entry gateway to the 2-year IIM PGPs, FMS Delhi, MDI Gurgaon (PGP), SPJIMR PGDM as well as a few other Indian flagship programs is CAT. The key to ISB, SPJIMR PGPM, the IIM 1-year executive MBAs (PGPX, EPGP, MBAEx) and all other leading world MBA programs is the GMAT. They complement one another, and are not substitutes.
The cost of CAT is approximately Rs 2,500 and is annual (late November) and single shot. The GMAT is available year-round test, one can take up to 5 attempts within a 12-month period and costs between Rs 23000-25000. DILR puzzles and extreme time pressure make CAT more difficult; adaptive consistency and Data Insights are more challenging in GMAT.
Undergraduates in their final year and aiming to join flagship 2-year IIMs are should default to CAT. Professionals with 24 plus months of experience, and who are targeting EMBAs or international programs should switch to the GMAT. Applicants aiming to do both can prepare CAT first (June to November), appear for CAT and then resume GMAT preparation in January with an attempt in April.
The Decision Framework
1. If your only goal is IIM A, B, or C 2-year PGP, take CAT only
2. If you have 24 plus months of work experience and target ISB, SPJIMR, IIM 1-year MBAs, or international programs, take GMAT only
3. If you are targeting both, prep CAT first then GMAT after results
4. If you are a final-year undergrad open to deferred admissions abroad, take GMAT and apply to ISB YLP or HBS 2 plus 2
5. If you are unsure, default to GMAT for its flexibility and broader school coverage
