Listening Strategy

Predict answers before recording starts. Write while listening. Transfer answers carefully. No re-play of recordings. 10-minute transfer time (paper only - none on computer).

Key skill: predict + transfer
True / False / Not Given

The most important question type. Candidates lose marks by confusing False (contradicted in text) with Not Given (not mentioned). Practice distinguishing actively.

High frequency · Academic & GT
Matching Headings

Match headings to paragraphs. Read the main idea of each paragraph, not just keywords. Often appears in Academic Reading Passage 3 (hardest passage).

High frequency · Academic
Summary / Note Completion

Fill blanks in a summary using words from the text. Answers come in paragraph order. Strict word limit (usually 1 word / 2 words). Watch plurals and tense.

High frequency · Both
Multiple Choice

Choose 1 from 4 options, or 2/3 from a list. Questions in text order. Eliminate distractors - wrong options often mention real words from the text in misleading context.

Moderate frequency · Both
Matching Information / Features

Match statements to paragraphs or people. Answers NOT in order - requires scanning entire text. 2026 trend: Infographic Labelling now appears in some Academic Reading tests.

Moderate frequency · Academic
Short Answer Questions

Answer questions with words from the text. Strict word limit. Look for W/H questions → scan for people, places, numbers in text. No inference needed.

Lower frequency · Both
Academic Task 1: Single Chart

Describe a bar chart, line graph, pie chart, or table. 150+ words in 20 minutes. Overview sentence is mandatory. Present tense for current data; past tense for historical data.

150+ words · 20 min
Academic Task 1: Mixed Charts (2026 Trend)

Two charts combined - e.g., pie chart + table or bar chart + line graph. 2026 trend: Mixed Charts dominate. Strategy: write one overview covering both charts, then compare key data points across both.

2026 pattern · High frequency
Academic Task 1: Process / Map

Describe a process (with arrows/stages) or two maps showing change over time. Use passive voice for processes. Use compass directions and spatial language for maps.

Moderate frequency · Academic
Academic Task 2: Argumentative Essay

250+ words in 40 minutes. Task 2 carries 2x the weight of Task 1. Question types: Discuss Both Views, Opinion, Problem/Solution, Advantages/Disadvantages, Double Question. Structured introduction + 2 body paragraphs + conclusion.

250+ words · 40 min · 2x weight
GT Task 1: Formal/Informal Letter

Write a letter of complaint, request, application, or invitation. 150+ words. Tone must match the audience (formal for authority figures, informal for friends). Opening and closing phrases are assessed.

150+ words · GT only
Writing Assessment Criteria

Each task marked on 4 criteria (25% each): Task Achievement/Response, Coherence & Cohesion, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy. Templates penalised in 2026 - originality rewarded.

4 criteria · Equal weight

IELTS Speaking is a face-to-face interview with a certified IELTS examiner. 11-14 minutes. The only section not taken on the computer - always face-to-face.

Part 1: Introduction (4-5 min)

Familiar topics: home, family, work, hobbies, travel. Short answers. Examiners listen for natural, fluent responses - not scripted ones. 2026: abstract topics (social media, environment) appearing more in Part 1.

4-5 min · Accessible
Part 2: Long Turn (3-4 min)

Cue card with a topic + 4 bullet points. 1 minute preparation, 1-2 minutes speaking. Describe a person, place, event, or experience. CATKing strategy: cover all 4 bullets, use specific examples, vary vocabulary.

1 min prep + 2 min speaking
Part 3: Discussion (4-5 min)

Abstract questions related to the Part 2 topic. Examiner asks for opinions, comparisons, future trends. 2026: future speculation questions ("How do you think X will change?") test Band 7+ candidates here.

4-5 min · Band 7+ differentiator
Speaking Assessment Criteria

4 criteria (25% each): Fluency & Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range & Accuracy, Pronunciation. Band 7+ requires varied vocabulary, complex grammar used correctly, and clear pronunciation - not accent-free, just intelligible.

4 criteria · Equal weight
CATKing Speaking Mock

IELTS-certified trainers simulate real examiner sessions. Evaluation on all 4 criteria. Video recording available for self-review. Multiple mock sessions cover the full range of Part 1/2/3 question types.

Mock sessions · All plans
Speaking Tips for Band 7+

Expand answers with reasons and examples. Use discourse markers (Furthermore, However, In contrast). Correct yourself naturally - self-correction is not penalised. Avoid long pauses. Pronunciation: clarity over accent.

What is One Skill Retake (OSR) and should I use it?+
OSR lets you retake just one section (Listening, Reading, Writing, or Speaking) within 60 days of your original test at ~₹12,650 - less than half the full re-test fee of ₹19,000. CATKing includes an OSR Strategy Session in all IELTS plans - we analyse your section bands and tell you exactly which section to retake and how to prepare in 30 days for maximum improvement.
How many attempts can I take for IELTS?+
There is no limit on the number of IELTS attempts. Computer-delivered IELTS is available daily in 100+ Indian cities - you can book a new attempt as soon as you are ready. CATKing recommends attempting after at least 4-6 weeks of focused preparation. Use the OSR to fix individual weak sections rather than retaking the full test unnecessarily.
How many students did CATKing help achieve Band 7+ last year?+
1,200+ Band 7-8 achievers in the 2024-25 cycle with CATKing IELTS programmes. Students have secured admits at Edinburgh, UBC, McGill, UNSW, Wharton, and 200+ other universities globally. UK nursing (NMC), Canada PR (IRCC), and Australia visa achievements also documented. Names and testimonials visible in the testimonials section above.
Can I talk to someone before buying?+
Yes. The Talk to Counsellor button below books a free 15-minute consultation with a senior CATKing counsellor experienced in IELTS and study-abroad applications. No sales pressure - just honest guidance on which plan fits your target band, destination, and timeline.
How long is my IELTS score valid?+
IELTS scores are valid for 2 years from the test date. This is the standard accepted by universities, immigration authorities (UKVI, IRCC, DHA), and professional bodies (NMC, GMC) worldwide. If your score expires before your visa or admission process, you will need to retake. CATKing recommends timing your test 12-18 months before your target intake date.
What band do I need for a UK student visa?+
For a UK Student Visa (Tier 4), you need IELTS UKVI with a minimum B2 level - typically 5.5 overall with no band below 5.5 for most university programmes, or 6.0-7.5 depending on the university and programme. For NHS/NMC nursing registration, the requirement is 7.0 in each section (no component below 7.0). CATKing's UKVI-specific prep covers these requirements precisely.
I am still in college. Can I start IELTS prep now?+
Yes, and starting early is an advantage. IELTS has no eligibility restriction - you can take the test at any age and appear as many times as you wish. Many students begin preparation in the final year of their Bachelor's to secure a Band 7+ before applying for Master's programmes. Since scores are valid for 2 years, a test taken now covers applications for the 2026 or 2027 intake.
