Atheist

Meaning: A person who disbelieves or lacks belief in the existence of God or gods.
(If you’re an atheist, you don’t believe in a god who oversees your life.)
The atheist wrote a novel disproving the existence of a higher power.
Because Billy is an atheist, he has no interest in marrying a church-going woman.

Agnostic

Meaning: a person who believes that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of God.

(Agnosticism) -the philosophy that claims that God is unknowable, that He may or may not exist, and that human beings can never come to a final conclusion about Him. The agnostic does not deny the existence of a deity, as does the atheist, but simply holds that no proof can be adduced one way or the other.
After my husband became agnostic, he stopped going to church because of his doubt about god’s existence. John knew he was too agnostic to dedicate his life to the church when he started to doubt the reality of Christ.

Pantheism

Meaning: The belief that God, or a group of gods, is identical with the whole natural world. Belief that God is not in man’s image, but is a combination of all forces of the universe.
The great objection to pantheism is that, though ostensibly it magnifies the Creator and gets rid of the difficult dualism of Creator and Creation, it tends practically to deny his existence in any practical intelligible sense.
This yields a characteristic type of pantheism, in the theory of the Unknowable which – rather paradoxically – is offered to us.
Pantheism thus takes the place of the old dualism there seems no place left for the individual.

Monotheism

Meaning: the doctrine or belief that there is only one God.

Though one may often be repelled by their lifelessness, their lack of spontaneity and the externalization of the ritual, it must be recognized that they placed a strict monotheism upon a legal basis.

To this school Christianity is the culmination of the ethical monotheism of the Old Testament, which finds its highest ideal in self-sacrificing love.

Polytheism

Meaning: the belief in or worship of more than one god.

In most mythological tales, citizens pray to many gods as a result of their acceptance of polytheism.

With the rise of a belief in departmental gods comes the age of polytheism; the belief in elemental spirits may still persist, but they fall into the background and receive no cult.

Apostasy

Meaning: One who has abandoned one’s religious faith, a political party, one’s principles, or a cause.

(Apostasy –  the abandonment or renunciation of a religious or political belief or principle.)

Iconoclast

Meaning: one who is against all religions, caste and traditions. Or a person who attacks or criticizes cherished beliefs or institutions or a destroyer of images used in religious worship, in particular.

Adolescence is that confused and rebellious time of life in which iconoclasm is quite normal-indeed the adolescent who is not iconoclastic to some degree might be considered either immature or maladjusted.

The church leader was deemed an iconoclast when he spoke out against his religion’s views.

Theology

Meaning: study of gods or the study of the nature of God and religious belief or religious beliefs and theory when systematically developed.

Juggernaut

Meaning: a huge, powerful, and overwhelming force.

A juggernaut in current English usage is a literal or metaphorical force regarded as mercilessly destructive and unstoppable. This usage originated in the mid-nineteenth century as an allegorical reference to the Hindu temple of lord Jagannath.

The company predicts its unique mobile phone will become a bestseller and make it a juggernaut in the phone market.

Once the retail chain builds ten more stores it will be a juggernaut because it will have more stores than its rivals.
